The original drinking fountain in this location was part of the Mitcham water works. Built in 1879, these Water Works supplied water to Mitcham village  and supplemented the water supplies of Unley and Adelaide. Today remnants of the Mitcham Water Works, are a rare example of mid-nineteenth century technology for harnessing and reticulating water.

There was another drinking fountain at the Mitcham tram stop by Sutton Gardens and a third in the Brownhill Creek Recreation Reserve. The picture shows part of the water works reticulation system in Brownhill Creek
