The Mitcham Methodist Church as it was then known was built in 1892. Before large churches were built in Adelaide communities worshipped in private homes and then in small multi-purpose buildings used also as schools and community meeting places. By the 1880s there were many fine churches throughout Adelaide.
The Honorary John Colton was one of the first trustees of the Church, he was very active in politics and civic affairs, serving terms as premier of South Australia, Treasurer, Commissioner of Public works and Mayor of Adelaide. The church was extended to include a kindergarten in 1915 and a community hall in 1929. As the community continued to grow throughout the 1950s and 60s, funds were raised to build a modern new church facing Princes Road. It opened 16 June 1963.
