The Mitcham police station was built in 1892. The original plans were for a Charge Room, Living Room, one bedroom and a kitchen for the Police Officer in Charge and his family. After complaints that it was too small plans were revised to include an additional bedroom and separate eat-in kitchen. The house was still very small by today’s standards. There is a copy of the plans on display in the former Charge Room.

The freestanding double police cells at the back of the building were short term holding cells. They contained a wooden bench along the wall. Corrugated iron wall sheeting was double thickness to prevent damage from irate prisoners.

An old stone building stands alone. Go up the steps. Eyes up. When was it built and what was it for?
